But let us face it. Internet can really pose a great danger for our kids. I was in awe at first when I saw kids so comfortable in using the computer and the Internet but then I realized that because kids nowadays are so high tech and computer savvy, the Internet can be an unsafe place for them.
Below are just some of the dangers lurking in the internet for our kids:
- Exposure to adult content, gambling and violence. Since it is very easy to look for information on the Internet, a simple Google search can lead your kids to sites with undesirable content which are not fit for kids and minors.
- Kids can be an easy target by child predators. With the advent of social networking sites, these child predators can easily pose as a friend and gain the trust and confidence of the kids, thus making them vulnerable to child predation.
- Identity theft is one of the most common online crimes and exposure of information about our kids when they go online makes them an excellent target for identity theft.
- Kids can be a victim of cyber bullying too where they can receive harassment through emails, blogs, chats, etc.
But of course there are some things that we can do to protect our kids from online danger:
- Set up the computer that your child uses in a communal room. That way, you can easily monitor their online activities.
- Get software that can monitor all online activities and at the same time limit the sites that your child can access.
- Parents should also educate themselves on what is the latest in the online world – from social networking sites, to chat rooms, blogs and others. By doing this, they can easily understand how each works so they can better monitor what their child does online.
- It is also the responsibility of the parents to educate their kids on what type of information they can and cannot divulge in the Internet.
- Set policies and make sure your child follows it like policy on the number of hours they can go online, what sites they can and cannot visit, what type of information they can share online, and the like.
- Do other activities with your kids aside from going line. Buy discount books that you can read together with your kids, take a walk in the park, plant a flower in the garden. This can open your kids to other fun activities instead of just having their day to day activities revolve around the Internet.
