Feeling a little heavy is a real knock to self confidence, especially on those days when an important event looms, be it a business meeting or a lunch with an old friend. Most women will have experienced the sinking feeling that comes with opening the closet and knowing that there is not a single item in there that is going to make them feel better about themselves that day.
We all know that the usual course of action on “fat” days is to smother our figures in baggy layers in an attempt to hide what we perceive to be the lumps and bumps below. But is this really the best way to go?
Fashion experts will tell you that attempting to hide curves in swathes of fabric will have the opposite effect to that intended, making you look larger and lumpier than you actually are. So what is the best way to dress when you are having a bad body day?
The answer is to fight against the instinct to hide. Choose items of clothing that show off the natural contours of your shape and add features to the areas where you are happy for attention to be drawn -- an eye-catching necklace at the décolletage or a smart belt cinching you in at the slimmest point.
Trying to make yourself inconspicuous by dressing down when you feel dowdy is likely to attract the wrong kind of attention, so be proud of your appearance, even if you feel a little bulgy or bloated. Walk with confidence, keep your head held high and it is entirely possible that no one but you will know that you don’t feel so great about yourself that day.
Oh, and if all else fails, slam on some super shoes -- what girl can feel bad about herself when wearing a pair of killer heels?
