Although the world has become very trendy and materialistic, often times status statements can be made with a purpose. Whether the goal is to get a new job, a new significant other, or just to bolster confidence, there are some times when being a little material can be just the answer. Many products instantly give the appearance of professionalism when looking for a new job. A high end cell phone and laptop can say more about a young job applicant than a bag phone from 1982 and a zipper binder could. Although both of these items represent a large financial investment, it is important to remember that both are worth as much as they are used. Perhaps a high end computer wouldn't benefit a fireman much, but it would certainly benefit a marketing major or journalist. When professionals invest in high end items for their career, it shows prospective employers that they are serious about their jobs.
Similarly, wearing designer clothes can send out the strong signal to members of the opposite sex that you take your love life seriously. While nobody wants to date someone who is more concerned with their own appearance than anything else, it would also be difficult to date someone who took no pride in the way they looked. By purchasing some new clothes and taking the time to properly iron and launder them, individuals can be sure that the opposite sex takes them seriously.
Finally, sometimes an expensive, undeserved status symbol just makes people feel good. Sometimes it can be dangerous to make a habit out of it, splurging on some big ticket items can be the best way people remind themselves that they are worth it. Although designer clothes and fancy telephones don't make people better at the core, they can be the tools needed to get others to take a closer look.
